Undoubtedly one of the largest and best punk bands of an era Sham 69 are as influential today as they were in the lat 1970’s.   Led by the charismatic and unstoppable Jimmy Pursey, they continue to perform at a level unchallenged by the vast majority of punk bands! Another band that further defined the punk rock genre is Chelsea. Often known as the group the spawned the birth of Generation X lead by Billy Idol.

Although not as commercial successful as Generation X, Chelsea are unquestionably part of the fabric of UK punk culture. It is a little known fact that the lead singer from Chelsea ‘Eugine October’ played an integral part in the creation of the first ever Live Punk Rock Venue in London Called ‘The Roxy’. He did this by Persuading a nightclub manger to convert his venue in convent garden venue into a heaven for the London Punk Rock Culture.

The Sex Drugs And HIV project was started in 1996 to support and raise awareness for 4 charity’s; Terrence Higgins Trust, Rape Crisis, Release, Cancer Research UK.  It took 15 years to record a double album of 40 songs with over 200 musicians. The album will be issued as 3 disks, (a double CD and DVD of all the songs).

The Sex Drugs & HIV show at the New Cross Inn on the 26th May is raise funds for the project for pressing the album CD’s.  The event will start at 2pm with the 1st public showing of the Sex Drugs & HIV album/film followed by Max Splodge’s Rock’n'Roll Bingo with ‘prize’s from the stars’.

The event will host punk, rock, ska & reggae bands, featuring musicians involved with the Sex Drugs & HIV project, including musicians from; The Revillos, The Godfathers, Angelic Upstarts, Sham 69, Chelsea, The Cure, R.D.F, P.A.I.N, The Astonaughts,The Duel, Electric Cocks, Tenpole Tudor, Splodgenessabounds.  The night will end with a set of songs from the Sex Drugs & HIV album performed by the Rock’n'Roll Gypsies, an all stars band fronted by Mat Sargent who founded the project.  Advance tickets £10 or £12 on the door.

One hour documentary broadcasting on Channel 4 this April Falkland’s Most Daring Raid brings alive a fast-paced, funny story of true grit and classic British derring-do to create a thrilling and uncharacteristically upbeat account from the Falklands War.

This gripping film tells the humorous yet heroic account of how a crumbling, Cold-War era Vulcan flew the then longest range bombing mission in history and how a WW2 vintage bomb changed the outcome of the Falklands War. Astonishingly, this story of one of the RAF’s greatest modern feats has been downplayed into near obscurity by history.

On 30th April 1982, the RAF launched a secret mission; to bomb Port Stanley’s runway, putting it out of action for invading Argentine fighter jets. The safety of the British Naval Task Force, steaming towards the islands, depended on its success.
But the RAF could only get a single Vulcan bomber 8,000 miles south to the Falklands and back again and even that was going to take a 16 hour continuous flight from Ascension Island and an aerial refuelling fleet of thirteen Handley Page Victor tankers.

At the heart of the RAF’s plan was the iconic but ageing Avro Vulcan bomber. But as Britain’s original Cold War nuclear deterrent, the ‘Tin Triangles’ were in the process of being scrapped. Now, just months from being decommissioned, three of the surviving nuclear bombers – one to fly the mission and two as reserve – had to be kitted out for war and retro-fitted to carry 21 x 1,000lb WW2 iron bombs. Crucial spare parts had to be scavenged from museums around the world and whilst others were found in scrap yards – one vital piece was discovered being used as an ashtray in the Officer’s Mess.
In just three weeks, the Vulcan crews had to learn air-to-air refuelling, something the Vulcan hadn’t done for 20 years, described by one pilot as like ‘trying to stick wet spaghetti up a cat’s backside’, and conventional bombing, which they hadn’t done for ten. The RAF scoured the country to find just enough WW2 bombs and refuelling calculations were done the night before on a £5.00 pocket calculator.
With a plan stretched to the limit and the RAF’s hopes riding ultimately on just one Vulcan, the mission was flown on a knife-edge; fraught with mechanical failures, unreliable navigation, electrical storms and empty fuel tanks. Of the Vulcan’s 21 WW2 bombs, only one found the target. But that was enough to change the outcome of the war?
Based on Rowland White’s best-selling book, Vulcan 607, the documentary uses strong first-hand testimonies from the original Vulcan and Victor crews and stylised drama filmed in and around a surviving Vulcan Bomber.
It is the Dambusters for the 1980s generation.

Following on from the success of the autumn festival line-up, this spring sees a further three exciting festivals across London celebrating the very best in cinema. Covering all genres from Independent, Bollywood and Asian pictures; the best up and coming films from aspiring new talent to science fiction and beyond, London Asian Film Festival, Screentest and Sci-Fi-London are guaranteed to have something for everyone.

The three film festivals are supported by Film London\’s Pilot Publicity Fund (PPF), an innovative fund which aims to boost awareness of London\’s diverse film festivals in order to bring alternative film to new audiences.

Entering its 14th year, the LONDON ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL kicks off the season with a fantastic line up of films and events at venues across the capital. The psychological drama MICHAEL starring Naseeruddin Shah opens the festival which will be presented by Meera Syal at BFI Southbank on 16 March with Abhishek Bachchan in attendance, followed by Michael Winterbottom\’s TRISHNA which screens at the Apollo Piccadilly on 17 March. This year sees a Pakistani film section with a screening of the highly controversial film BOL which will be followed by a Q&A with the lead actress Humaima Malik and the highly regarded director Rubaiyat Hossain will be participating in a Q&A following the screening of her film MEHERJAAN on 19 March.

In this year of the Paralympics, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be given an award in recognition of his work on disability in film. Sanjay will also be delivering the Nargis Dutt lecture at the University of Westminster on 22 March and there will be screenings of his critically acclaimed films BLACK and GUZAARISH during the ten day event. The festival closes with a glitzy closing night Awards ceremony at BAFTA. Films will screen at BFI Southbank, Apollo Piccadilly, Watermans, Richmix, Harrow Arts Centre, Nehru Centre and SOAS.

Hot on its heels is SCREENTEST, the National Student Film Festival dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of aspiring British talent. The festival returns to London South Bank University where a number of workshops and talks with industry professionals and an array of top quality student films will be on show.

With a record 154 films submitted from all over the UK, this year promises to be a highly charged festival for all to see. The festival culminates with an Awards show on 24 March at The Roxy Bar where 14 Awards will be handed out including the new \’Screentest Institute of Excellence Award\’ in association with the BFI Future Film Festival. This is awarded to the institute that has gone above and beyond to give its students the very best support and exposure at festivals. Films will screen at London South Bank University, the Roxy and Screen.

Festival Director and London South Bank University student Chris Nunn, who is currently studying for his MA in Digital Film and Video, said: \”We\’re very proud to be hosting this year\’s Screentest at London South Bank University once again, close by one of the cultural centres of British film on the South Bank. \”This year we\’ve once again had a record number of entries, so the 2012 festival promises to be more competitive than ever.\”

Screentest is supported by the ECU Independent Film Festival in Paris which showcases all of the winning films from Screentest during their festival between the 30th March and 1st April.

Rounding up the season is SCI-FI-LONDON, the London international festival of science fiction and fantastic film. The UK\’s leading genre event and an internationally recognised launch pad for genre movies, the festival hosts at least a dozen UK premieres.

Highlights of this year\’s festival include a 48-hour film challenge where participants are given two days to make their very own film and are given just three things to aid them: title; dialogue; props! Previous winners include Gareth Edwards (Monsters). The festival will screen at the Apollo Piccadilly Circus Cinema as well as the BFI Southbank and selected venues within central London.

The Duel – All Aboard The Crazy Train [Album]

Since they formed in 2001 The Duel have gone from strength to strength releasing well received albums and extensively toured the UK, Europe and some legendary US punk-rock clubs including New York’s CBGB before it permanently closed its doors. Starting as a two piece with Tara Rez on vocals and Andy Theirum on bass and Keyboards, the band expanded into a full line up and supported the mighty Dead Kennedys for their first punk show. The band has garnered impressive music reviews in magazines such as Viva Le Rock and Big Cheese magazine as well as racking up a dedicated fan base and respect from fellow artists.

Their third album ‘All Aboard The Crazy Train’ has a classic punk sound reminiscent of the Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Right from the opening song ‘Crazy Train’ you feel the band is trying to get a message across about the current state of the world as Rez’s powerful vocals set you up for wild ride.

The album continues to pay homage to punk-rockers that have come before with songs such as ‘Singin n Dancin’, ‘Loneliness’, ‘Blaze of Fury’ and ‘Troubled England’ littered with heavy, catchy bass lines and well placed guitar riffs which gives this album a genuine 70s punk feel. The rest of the album continues along with strong, socially relevant lyrics and classic punk sounds. Songs like ‘We The People’, ‘Yooth’ and ‘The Way London Used To Be’ are classically crafted punk songs with a modern political feel.

The bonus track ’2 Suns’ has an almost psychedelic punk feel, with a faced moving pace and dark, impressive vocals. It is certainly an interesting inclusion that works well as the final album track.

All in all an impressive piece of work. All 16 tracks on this album are well crafted and thoughtfully recorded to pay homage to the punk rock bands that have come before them, but continues to stay modern and edgy with relevant lyrics and catchy sounds.
